Professor Dato’ Dr. Mohd Amin Jalaludin graduated from the University of Malaya with an MBBS degree in 1982. He had a distinguished academic career in the field of otorhinolaryngology and also in the specialised field of Head and Neck Surgery. He was the Head of the ENT Department from 1996 to 2000 and later became the Dean in April 2000. In June 2000, he assumed the position as the Director of the University of Malaya Medical Centre, a post he held until he was appointed to the Deputy Vice-Chancellorship in August 2006. |
| Despite his academic professional and administrative commitments, Professor Dato’ Dr. Amin contributes time and effort towards community service by being the Honorary Medical Advisor for the Spastic Children Society of Selangor and the Federal Territory since February 1999. During the time he was Dean of the Medical Faculty he was involved with several humanitarian community oriented activities related to the deaf and the handicapped and extended his work through international organisations. As dean he spearheaded international education at the university and was instrumental in recruiting students from Africa and the Middle East. He also contributed to the dissemination of knowledge in the Asia Pacific Region by supporting the development of the Asia Pacific Journal of Public Health for nearly a decade since the journal’s editorial office moved from Singapore in 1998. He shaped the evolution of the journal into a world-class journal yet ensuring its first objective, which is 80% of the articles published are from the non-English speaking developing countries in the Asia Pacific Region. His sustained contributions over a decade have been recognised and he serves as the current Vice President for the Asia Pacific Academic Consortium for Public Health. | |
In his role as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and Internationalisation), he has expanded academic networks and the contributions of the university beyond the field of medicine and health. About 9% of the nearly thirty thousand student body come from 78 countries to attend the University of Malaya which also has a rich infusion of faculty expertise from many nations. More than 19% of the academic staff are international, making the University of Malaya a truly international University in Asia. The Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization (ISTAC) and the Center for Civilisational Dialogue which Dr. Amin has promoted adds to the globalisation of learning and harmony among nations. It strongly reflects his values to make the university a place of learning, a place for new knowledge and discovery. But also a place in our times of competition, violence and hate a place to promote understanding in healing hearing and listening, not only in his specialized field-- of otorhinolaryngology-- but across academia in Malaysia and the Asia Pacific Region. |
|
Professor Dato’ Dr. Mohd Amin Jalaludin has contributed much to promoting the quality of life, health of people and communities in Malaysia and the Asia Pacific Region and is a worthy recipient of the Professor Kazue K Mclaren Leadership award, whose work as Professor and humanitarian he reflects. |
